recruiting 'tobacco heads'
Recruiting future business managers to an industry that is under global pressure for responsible action and disclosure is quite a challenge. Add to this the stringent corporate guidelines of the parent company, (BAT), and you have a demanding design brief. United Notions was asked to interpret a large glossy international communication piece for graduates into the Australian context in a way that made what might be seen by todays sophisticated grads as corporate hype believable and motivating for young talent to join their trans-national enterprise.

United Notions design & production team developed a different approach. Different size, different presenters with a credible tone-of-voice (actual working graduates to tell their story) in a dynamic & persausive way. We organised the photography, helped tidy up their copy and produced both print and website images on a hectic timeframe to meet the need to lobby universities at major recruitment events very soon.

The sporting theme of the cover also challenged the female stereotype in so much graduate promotion to give this recruitment campaign a real point of difference. A year later we updated the package with the BATA logos and colour palette since the initial package had been developed just prior to the merger of WD & HO Wills with Rothmans Holding to form the new British American Tobacco Australia. Inside this new package we launched the global campaign theme "We challenge you" and illustrated the 6 major function areas of the enterprise.

• Operations
• Marketing
• Finance
• Human Resources
• Information Technology
• Coporate & Regulatory Affairs

The next year we moved into the multi-media world of a CD delivered package extending the "We challenge you... to make a difference" theme. There was also an online extension created on BATA's Australian web server at www.bata.com.au/batagrad.
